How a former child actor became the first chef to earn two Michelin stars.
In short: Tom Kerridge once pursued acting, but a cookbook by Marco Pierre White changed his trajectory. Today, he is a celebrated chef known for elevating pub food. His journey from a single-parent household in Gloucester to culinary stardom reveals the intense discipline required to master the high-pressure world of professional kitchens.
Born in 1973, Tom Kerridge’s early life was defined by the challenges of a single-parent household. After his parents divorced when he was 11, he took on domestic responsibilities, including cooking for his younger brother. Though he briefly appeared in television roles as a child, including a 1991 Miss Marple special, he pivoted to professional cooking at 18. Inspired by White Heat, he attended catering college in Cheltenham and began a rigorous career path through various British kitchens, including stints under Philip Britten and Gary Rhodes.
In 2005, Kerridge and his wife, sculptor Beth Cullen-Kerridge, opened The Hand & Flowers in Marlow. The venture was a gamble that required immense personal sacrifice; the couple lived above the pub while Kerridge worked 90-hour weeks. The intensity of their early years together was such that Beth left him three times during their first year of business. Despite the pressure, the pub achieved unprecedented success, becoming the first in history to earn two Michelin stars in 2012. Kerridge has since expanded his footprint with further restaurants, television series, and festivals.
Kerridge’s career has not been without significant hardship. In 2018, a severe accident occurred at The Hand & Flowers when a pressurized stock boiler exploded, leaving chef Andy Lewis with life-altering injuries. Kerridge supported Lewis throughout his seven-month recovery, a testament to the loyalty he fosters within his teams. Beyond the kitchen, Kerridge has undergone a personal transformation, losing 12 stone (76.2 kg) after turning 40 by adopting the dopamine diet and abstaining from alcohol. Today, he remains a prominent voice in the industry, recently launching a campaign to reduce VAT for UK hospitality venues.
