From Dublin stages to the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the craft of Tom Vaughan-Lawlor
In short: Irish actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor has built a career defined by intense, transformative performances. While global audiences recognize him as the villainous Ebony Maw in the Avengers franchise, his roots lie in rigorous classical training and acclaimed stage work, proving that the most compelling screen presence is often forged in theatre.
Born in Dundrum, Dublin, in 1977, Vaughan-Lawlor followed his father into the acting profession. His formal education included a degree in Drama Studies from Trinity College, Dublin, followed by training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His early promise was recognized when he became the first Irish actor to receive the Laurence Olivier Bursary, a £7,500 award granted to the United Kingdom-based actor deemed to have the greatest potential.
Vaughan-Lawlor is perhaps most celebrated in Ireland for his portrayal of Nigel 'Nidge' Delaney in the RTÉ crime drama Love/Hate, a role he inhabited from 2010 to 2014. His performance was noted for its complexity, as he navigated the character's shifting morality and internal conflicts across four series. This role earned him multiple IFTA awards, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2012 and Best Actor for Television in 2013. His ability to command a stage was equally evident in his 2013 performance in Mark O'Rowe's Howie the Rookie, where he played both lead characters in a production that toured from Dublin to London and New York.
His career spans a diverse range of mediums and genres. He has appeared in historical dramas, such as playing P. J. Mara in the political series Charlie and Patrick Pearse in Trial of the Century, alongside film roles in The Infiltrator and The Secret Scripture. His stage work remains a constant, with a 2023 appearance in the National Theatre's revival of Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa. Now residing in Whitstable, Kent, with his wife, actress Claire Cox, Vaughan-Lawlor continues to balance high-profile international projects, such as his 2026 role in HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with his enduring commitment to the craft of acting.
