From Hawaii Playing Fields to College Football Coordinator
In short: Dino Babers' career path through college football coaching reveals a steady progression of roles, from playing days to high-level coordinator positions. His journey includes stints at several prominent universities, showcasing adaptability in the demanding world of collegiate athletics.
Dino Sean Babers, born on July 19, 1961, began his athletic journey at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he played both running back and defensive back between 1979 and 1983. His initial foray into coaching came in 1984 when he started as a graduate assistant at Hawaii. From this foundation, his resume expanded to include offensive coordinator roles at both Texas A&M and Arizona, alongside time as an assistant head coach with UCLA.
Babers' head coaching tenure began in earnest with Eastern Illinois University. On December 9, 2011, he took over as the head football coach, succeeding Bob Spoo. During his two seasons there, the Panthers achieved playoff berths both times, a period highlighted by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft.
His career trajectory continued with appointments at Bowling Green State University and Syracuse University. Babers was hired as the head coach at Bowling Green on December 18, 2013, following Dave Clawson's departure to Wake Forest; he guided the Falcons to the 2015 Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship. Subsequently, he joined Syracuse on December 5, 2015. After securing a contract extension through the 2023 season following a 10-win season in 2018, Babers was ultimately dismissed from his Syracuse role on November 19, 2023, just before the conclusion of the 2023 regular season, marking only two winning seasons across his eight years there.
Most recently, Brent Brennan, the new head coach at the University of Arizona, brought Babers on as offensive coordinator in February 2024. It is noted that Brennan had previously been a graduate assistant at Arizona during Babers' initial time as offensive coordinator in 2000. However, Babers' contract was not renewed after the conclusion of the 2024 season.
