Why the Atlanta Braves left a perfectly good stadium for a new one
In short: When the Braves abandoned Turner Field in 2017, it was younger than most major league ballparks. The move to Truist Park was not just about the field; it was a calculated shift toward a mixed-use entertainment model, designed to capture fan engagement through a fully integrated, year-round destination experience.
The decision to leave Turner Field, which had served as the team's home since 1997, was driven by a combination of logistical frustrations and financial realities. Despite being a relatively modern facility, Turner Field faced significant maintenance challenges, with executives estimating that $350 million in renovations would be required to address structural upkeep and fan experience. Furthermore, the team lacked control over the commercial development surrounding the stadium, and its downtown location was increasingly disconnected from the majority of the fan base.
Truist Park, which opened in 2017, represents a departure from the isolated stadium model. Built in the unincorporated community of Cumberland, the project was part of a broader $1.1 billion development that includes The Battery Atlanta, a massive complex of shops, dining, and housing. By integrating the ballpark into a mixed-use district, the Braves aimed to create a destination that functions even when no game is being played. This strategy was supported by a public-private partnership, with Cobb County issuing up to $397 million in bonds for the stadium's construction.
The design of Truist Park reflects a focus on intimacy and modern technology. Using a vertical layout, the stadium positions spectators closer to the field than at the team's former home. The facility also features extensive connectivity, including 250 miles of fiber optic lines and a Wi-Fi network capable of supporting over 10,000 concurrent users. While the project faced initial public opposition regarding the use of tax dollars, the Georgia Supreme Court unanimously upheld the bond authorization in 2015, clearing the way for the Braves to establish their new, highly integrated home.
