In short: It has soundtracked everything from Mickey Mouse to the sinking of the Titanic. Yet, the cheerful tune of 'Turkey in the Straw' carries a heavy history, originating from the 19th-century minstrel stage and evolving through a tangled web of disputed authorship and racial caricatures.

The melody's origins are a subject of intense musicological debate. While some believe it stems from 19th-century minstrel shows—specifically a song titled 'Zip Coon' published around 1834—others suggest deeper roots in British, Irish, or Scottish ballads like 'The Old Rose Tree.' The song's current identity is actually a hybrid; in 1861, Dan Bryant copyrighted a work titled 'Turkey in the Straw' that appended the wordless music of 'Zip Coon' to the end of a new composition.

The history of the lyrics is equally fraught. The 'Zip Coon' character was a caricature of a free Black man in the North, and the song's development is tied to the era of minstrelsy. While the word 'coon' was used to describe white frontiersmen in the 1830s, its derogatory use toward Black Americans became prominent by 1848. Some versions of the song, such as a 1916 recording by Harry C. Browne, utilized overt racial stereotypes and watermelon imagery, leading some to label it the most racist song title in the United States.

Despite this dark lineage, the tune has achieved immense cultural ubiquity. It served as a rhythmic foundation for the 1928 debut of Mickey Mouse in 'Steamboat Willie' and was even played by the band aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912. In recent years, the song's association with racial tropes led some American ice cream truck companies to abandon the melody for new jingles, even as historians point out that the tune existed long before the specific controversial adaptations were created.
