Why the creators of Shaun of the Dead pivoted to paranormal broadband installation
In short: In 2020, comedy icons Nick Frost and Simon Pegg launched Truth Seekers, a supernatural horror series blending mundane office life with ghost hunting. The show follows a broadband engineer searching for meaning, but despite a talented cast and eerie atmosphere, the project faced a swift cancellation after just one season.
Truth Seekers emerged from Stolen Picture, a production company founded by Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. Announced in January 2018, the project was envisioned as a half-hour comedy-horror series focusing on a trio of paranormal investigators. By August 2019, Amazon Prime Video had committed to a full series order, with Jim Field Smith directing all eight episodes of the debut season. The show features a distinct ensemble, including Emma D'Arcy as a woman haunted by ghosts, Samson Kayo as a new recruit with a knack for finding secret passages, and Malcolm McDowell as an aging father-in-law.
The narrative centers on Gus Roberts, played by Nick Frost, a top-tier engineer for Smyle, which is described as Britain's largest mobile network and internet provider. While Gus spends his professional hours installing broadband, his true passion lies in investigating the paranormal. His boss, David, portrayed by Simon Pegg, pairs him with a new partner, Elton John, leading to an unlikely friendship that bridges their day jobs and their supernatural pursuits. The cast is rounded out by Susie Wokoma as Elton's agoraphobic sister and Rosalie Craig as Gus's late wife, Emily.
The series premiered on 30 October 2020 on Amazon Prime Video, following an initial screening at the Canneseries Festival on 10 October 2020. Despite a generally positive reception—holding a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the show's tenure was brief. On 11 February 2021, Nick Frost announced via Instagram that the series had been cancelled by the platform. The production was also marked by the loss of executive producer and Stolen Picture CEO Miles Ketley, who passed away on 19 October 2020, just 11 days before the series reached audiences. While critics noted it lacked the explosive humor of previous Frost and Pegg collaborations, the show was praised for its ability to balance silly sensibilities with genuine, creeping terror.
