From Prussian mines to the world's largest travel giant
In short: The global tourism titan TUI Group began its life not in a beach resort, but in a German mine. This industrial evolution highlights a massive corporate pivot from extracting minerals to curating experiences for 21 million annual guests.
Founded on October 9, 1923, as the Prussian Mine and Foundry Company (Preussag AG), the organization was originally an industrial mining entity. It underwent a radical transformation in 1997 when it pivoted its core activities from mining to tourism. This transition was accelerated by the acquisition of Hapag-Lloyd AG and a 50.1% stake in Thomas Cook, which was later sold due to regulatory pressure. By 2002, the company officially rebranded as TUI AG.
The group's growth is defined by complex ownership shifts and strategic mergers. In 2007, it merged with First Choice to form TUI Travel plc. The company also navigated high-stakes shareholder dynamics involving Norwegian shipowner John Fredriksen, who demanded a split-up of the group in 2008, and Russian oligarch Alexey Mordashov. Mordashov's influence peaked as the largest private shareholder before he was placed under sanctions in March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.
Today, TUI is a massive leisure conglomerate operating 353 hotels with over 275,000 beds and managing a fleet of 134 aircraft. Its reach includes luxury cruise brands like Hapag-Lloyd Cruises—the only ships worldwide to receive a 5-star-plus category from the Berlitz Cruise Guide—and long-standing partnerships dating back to 1953 with RIU Hotels & Resorts. Despite facing a €2.3 billion net loss during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it remains a dominant force in global travel.
The company's history also includes significant divestments and acquisitions to optimize its portfolio. It sold off logistics activities (Hapag-Lloyd AG) by 2012 to focus on tourism and acquired the Italian online platform Musement in 2018. Its evolution serves as a case study in corporate adaptation, moving from heavy industry to the high-volume service economy.
