A globe-trotting odyssey spanning from Ancient Rome to Antarctica
In short: S. S. Rajamouli is crafting an Indian cinematic epic that defies geographical boundaries. From the sacred streets of Varanasi to the frozen reaches of the Ross Ice Shelf, this project blends high-concept sci-fi with deep cultural roots, aiming to become the most expensive Indian film ever made.
Directed by S. S. Rajamouli, 'Varanasi' is a Telugu-language action-adventure that serves as a massive technical undertaking. Boasting a projected expenditure of ₹1,400 crore, this production aims to exceed every prior Indian movie's manufacturing price. The narrative is structured as a "globetrotting adventure" inspired by the emotional weight of classic cinema like Raiders of the Lost Ark and the stylistic movement of Indiana Jones. It explores multiple timelines and yugas—moving from Treta Yuga to Kali Yuga—while traversing continents including Africa, Antarctica, and Ancient Rome.
The production is a feat of logistical engineering. To maintain secrecy, Rajamouli enforced non-disclosure agreements and banned mobile phones on set. The film features extensive location shooting in Kenya's Masai Mara and Amboseli National Park, as well as Odisha. Notably, it will be the first Indian film and only the fourth film globally to shoot on location in Antarctica at the Ross Ice Shelf. To accommodate its scale, the production utilized a massive set resembling the ancient city of Kashi in Koraput district and another elaborate replica in Hyderabad.
Technologically, 'Varanasi' pushes boundaries as the first non-English language film shot in the 1.43:1 IMAX format. The visual effects team, led by V. Srinivas Mohan, opted for traditional artist-driven CGI over generative AI to ensure photorealism for these large-scale sequences. A significant portion of the work was captured at India's largest motion and performance capture stage in Hyderabad, featuring 26-megapixel cameras and real-time visualization via Unreal Engine. The film is scheduled for a global theatrical release on April 7, 2027, coinciding with the festival of Ugadi.
The project also navigated complex legal and creative hurdles. A title dispute arose because another production claimed rights to the name 'Vaaranasi' since 2023; this was resolved by adopting different spellings and titles across various regions. The film features a high-profile cast including Mahesh Babu in a dual role, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, with a revenue-sharing model where the lead actors receive an advance plus 40% of the profits.
