A cinematic journey from Hyderabad to Switzerland and back
In short: What does it take to produce a romantic action comedy that spans continents? From constructing a massive villa set in Hyderabad to filming in Greece and Switzerland, the production of Brindavanam was a logistical marathon of international travel, local protests, and even a literal injury on set.
Produced by Dil Raju's Sri Venkateswara Creations, the film was a major undertaking that began with a launch at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad on August 15, 2009. The production team constructed a traditional villa set on 4 acres of land near Bachupally, utilizing 3 acres for the structure and 1 acre for a garden. The project was a first-time collaboration for director Vamsi Paidipally with both lead actor N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and composer S. S. Thaman.
The filming schedule was fraught with complications. While the shoot was initially slated for late 2009, it was pushed to December 1, 2009, to accommodate the final stages of NTR's previous project, Adhurs. The production faced a literal roadblock in Hyderabad when Telangana Rashtra Samithi activists protested at a Government Junior College, forcing the director to pause and pacify the group. Other hurdles included a week-long postponement due to the sudden death of actor Kota Srinivasa Rao's son.
The film's scope was truly international, featuring sequences shot in Pollachi (Tamil Nadu), Greece, and Switzerland. During a stunt sequence near Kokapet Mines, N. T. Rama Rao Jr. suffered a head injury requiring six stitches, briefly delaying the schedule. Despite these challenges, the film reached completion by September 15, 2010. It eventually became a commercial success, leading to six remakes across various Indian languages between 2012 and 2016.
The release of Brindavanam was a strategic puzzle. The production team initially planned a mid-July 2010 release, which shifted to October 1, and finally to October 14, 2010. This final date was chosen specifically to ensure a one-week gap from the release of the film Khaleja, ensuring the production had enough room to breathe in a crowded cinematic market.
