A snowy Vermont town turns deadly when a werewolf hides among its eccentric residents
In short: In the 2021 horror comedy Werewolves Within, a blizzard traps a group of suspicious neighbors in a remote lodge. As tensions rise over a proposed natural gas pipeline, the residents must determine which one of them is secretly a monster before they are all picked off one by one.
Directed by Josh Ruben and written by Mishna Wolff, Werewolves Within adapts a video game into a modern-day whodunit. The story centers on Finn Wheeler, a forest ranger assigned to the town of Beaverfield, where residents are already fractured by a pipeline project backed by businessman Sam Parker. When a storm cuts off the power, the townspeople take refuge in a lodge, only to find themselves stalked by a werewolf. The film relies on a claustrophobic setting to amplify the paranoia, as the characters turn on each other amidst accusations and sabotage.
The production process began in October 2018, with principal photography starting in February 2020 in New York State's Hudson Valley. To maintain a distinct visual style, director Josh Ruben opted for exaggerated costumes that he imagined could serve as action figures. Due to budget constraints, the production could not license the U.S. Postal Service logo, leading to the creation of a fictional 'National Mail Service' for the character played by Milana Vayntrub. The film features an ensemble cast including Sam Richardson, who also served as a producer.
Critics generally praised the film for its humor and character-driven narrative, with many comparing its ensemble-based mystery to the board game Clue. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an 86% approval rating, though some reviewers noted that the comedic tone occasionally undercut the sense of danger. While the film grossed nearly $1 million worldwide, its legacy is defined by its ability to balance horror tropes with social satire. Ultimately, the film suggests that the true monster in a divided community may not be the supernatural threat, but the paranoia that tears neighbors apart.
