A modern woman reincarnates into a novel to escape her own fictional death sentence
In short: When Eunha Park dies in contemporary Seoul, she awakens as Raeliana McMillan, a minor character destined for an early demise. To survive, she leverages her meta-knowledge of the plot to blackmail a powerful duke into a fake engagement. This high-stakes gamble forces an unlikely alliance against a prewritten, tragic fate.
The narrative originated as a South Korean web novel penned by Milcha, which began its run on the KakaoPage platform on September 19, 2016. Spanning 159 chapters across three main volumes and an additional volume of side stories, the work explores the tension between predetermined destiny and individual agency. The protagonist, known as Eunha Park in her previous life, finds herself trapped in the body of Raeliana McMillan, a supporting figure whose death is a fixed point in the original story's timeline.
To navigate this existential threat, Raeliana strikes a bargain with Duke Noah Volstaire Wynknight. She offers him silence regarding the location of the Royal Seal—a secret she possesses solely because she has read the original novel—in exchange for his protection through a sham betrothal. This premise has fueled a massive multimedia franchise, including a webtoon illustrated by Whale that ran from September 3, 2017, until March 22, 2021, and was later compiled into nine volumes.
The franchise's reach expanded significantly beyond its digital origins. A romance video game adaptation arrived in May 2021, followed by an anime television series produced by Typhoon Graphics. Directed by Junichi Yamamoto, the anime broadcast its episodes between April and June 2023. The story has also seen international distribution, with English translations available through Tappytoon and print releases licensed by Yen Press. Whether Raeliana can successfully rewrite her narrative or if the original plot remains inescapable is the central question driving the series' enduring popularity across multiple formats.
