In short: Before becoming a celebrated playwright and songwriter, Willy Russell worked as a hairdresser. His path from a teenage school leaver to an Academy Award nominee is a testament to the power of reinvention and the enduring resonance of his working-class stories.

Born on August 23, 1947, in Whiston, Lancashire, William Martin Russell’s early career was far from the stage. After leaving school at age 15, he worked as a women's hairdresser, eventually running his own salon until he decided to return to college at age 20. During this period of transition, he also performed as a semi-professional singer in folk clubs.

Russell’s professional theatrical career began to take shape in the early 1970s. While studying to be a teacher at Liverpool's Saint Katherine's College of Higher Education, he staged his debut play, Keep Your Eyes Down, in 1971. His breakout success arrived in 1974 with the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo...and Bert. The Liverpool Everyman commissioned this work about the Beatles' ascent and decline, which secured that year's Evening Standard and London Theatre Critic Awards for best musical.

Russell achieved significant international acclaim through several key works. His 1980 comedic play Educating Rita, which follows a working-class woman seeking self-improvement through education, was adapted into a 1983 film that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1983, he released Blood Brothers, a musical about twin brothers raised by different families. This work won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical and enjoyed a long West End run of over 20 years. His 1986 play Shirley Valentine also achieved massive success, transferring to Broadway in 1989 and earning an Olivier Award for Comedy of the Year.

Beyond the stage and screen, Russell has proven to be a versatile creator, releasing his first novel, The Wrong Boy, in 2000 and an album of songs, Hoovering the Moon, in 2003.
