From teenage television stardom to the high seas and back to the screen
In short: Willie Aames is a versatile American performer whose career spans decades of television, film, and unexpected professional pivots. Best known for his roles in Eight Is Enough and Charles in Charge, Aames has navigated a complex life in the spotlight, transitioning from child actor to Christian superhero and cruise director.
Born in 1960 in Newport Beach, California, Albert William Upton—known professionally as Willie Aames—began his acting career as a child in the late 1960s. Early appearances included roles in Gunsmoke and The Courtship of Eddie's Father. By 1971, he originated the role of Leonard Unger in The Odd Couple, and in 1974, he portrayed a young Benjamin Franklin in a miniseries. His breakthrough came in 1977 when he was cast as Tommy Bradford in the popular comedy-drama Eight Is Enough, a role he held until the series concluded in 1981.
Throughout the 1980s, Aames maintained a steady presence in entertainment. He starred as Buddy Lembeck in the sitcom Charles in Charge from 1984 to 1990 and provided the voice for Hank in the animated series Dungeons & Dragons between 1983 and 1985. His film work during this era included Zapped! and Paradise. Later, he took on the title role in the direct-to-video Christian superhero series Bibleman, which ran from 1995 to 2003. This period of his life was marked by both professional variety and personal challenges, including a public struggle with alcohol addiction.
In 2010, Aames underwent a significant career shift, moving away from acting to work as a cruise director for companies including Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Viking Cruises. This departure from Hollywood was punctuated by a 2009 event in Olathe, Kansas, where he held a garage sale to sell memorabilia during the Great Recession. Aames eventually returned to acting in 2016. Most recently, in 2024, he starred in the dark comedy Armageddon Road, directed by Karen Lam, which is set in 1976 Las Vegas.
