The sentient gauntlet that balances the cosmos and bonds with NYPD detectives
In short: Witchblade is more than a comic book series; it is a supernatural artifact that chooses its own hosts. From NYPD detectives to ballet dancers, this sentient gauntlet grants immense power while serving as the cosmic fulcrum between the forces of Darkness and the Angelus. Discover the history of this mystical weapon.
Created by Marc Silvestri and his team at Top Cow Productions, Witchblade debuted in November 1995. The series centers on Sara Pezzini, an NYPD homicide detective who becomes the bearer of a sentient gauntlet. This artifact is not merely a weapon but an offspring of the Darkness and the Angelus, existing to maintain balance between these primordial forces. While it typically bonds with women, the gauntlet possesses a male entity that can manifest in feminine forms.
The narrative spans decades and mediums, evolving through various hosts and creative teams. Sara Pezzini’s journey involves battling nefarious figures like Kenneth Irons, an immortal Templar Knight from the Third Crusade who sought the gauntlet's power. The lore expanded significantly as Sara passed the artifact to others, including the ballet dancer Danielle Baptiste. The series also introduced complex figures like the Curator, a sage-like observer who was later revealed to be the Survivor, a being manipulating history to resurrect a lost universe.
Beyond the original comic, which saw relaunches in 2017 and 2024, the franchise branched into diverse international adaptations. A live-action television series aired on TNT from 2001 to 2002, starring Yancy Butler. Japanese creators also contributed to the continuity, producing a 2006 anime featuring Masane Amaha, a manga titled Witchblade Takeru, and a novel centered on the character Yuri Miyazono. Despite various attempts at feature films and video games, these projects often faced cancellation, leaving the core comic book series as the primary vessel for the evolving saga of the gauntlet and its bearers.
