Why WWE created a new world title to solve a Roman Reigns problem
In short: When Roman Reigns held both major WWE championships simultaneously, his infrequent defenses left the roster stagnant. To restore brand exclusivity and provide new opportunities, WWE introduced the World Heavyweight Championship in 2023. Yet, this creation sparked intense debate over whether the new belt was a prestigious prize or a consolation.
The World Heavyweight Championship was unveiled on April 24, 2023, following the WWE Draft. The move was a direct response to Roman Reigns, who had unified the WWE Championship and the WWE Universal Championship into the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Because Reigns defended his titles sparingly, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque sought to establish a dedicated world title for the Raw brand, while keeping the undisputed championship exclusive to SmackDown.
The title's design is a deliberate homage to wrestling history, specifically the iconic Big Gold Belt used between 2002 and 2013. It incorporates elements from various WWE Championship iterations, including a crown inspired by Bruno Sammartino’s belt and an eagle motif reminiscent of the Winged Eagle design. To mark WWE's 60th anniversary, the belt features 60 diamonds across its three gold plates. Notably, the center plate includes three lions representing the McMahon family crest, a nod to the company's ownership history prior to September 2023.
Reception of the title has been polarized. Critics like Dave Scherer and Tommy Dreamer argued that the belt felt like a secondary consolation prize, suggesting it signaled that no one could defeat Reigns. Conversely, figures like Booker T defended the title as a vital opportunity for younger talent. Even those who praised the aesthetic, such as Kurt Angle, acknowledged the difficulty of positioning a new title as equal to the undisputed championship while Reigns remained undefeated. As of October 2026, the title has seen 10 reigns across seven champions, with Roman Reigns currently holding the belt after defeating CM Punk at WrestleMania 42.
The tournament to crown the inaugural champion, Seth Rollins, was strategically designed to maintain viewership against the 2023 NBA playoffs. While the title shares a name with the 2002–2013 version, it possesses no direct lineage. It stands as the sixth men's world title in company history, reflecting WWE's ongoing efforts to balance brand identity with the legacy of its top-tier championships.
