WWE Evolution 2025: A high-stakes return for women's professional wrestling
In short: After a seven-year hiatus, WWE's all-women's Evolution returns. This 2025 premium live event marks a milestone for the industry, becoming the first of its kind to broadcast across both Netflix and Peacock, signaling a new era for women's wrestling on a global scale.
Evolution 2025, the second iteration of this show, took place on July 13, 2025, at Atlanta, Georgia's State Farm Arena. The inaugural 2018 event had been WWE's first all-women's pay-per-view, but it faced internal skepticism; former wrestler Mickie James noted she was often cut off when pushing for more female-centric programming. She even claimed an unnamed official once dismissed the viability of women's wrestling due to low ratings. The original 2018 edition was the first all-female event in company history. This comeback follows years of speculation from various performers regarding a second instalment.
The 2025 event featured seven matches driven by complex, scripted storylines. In the main event, Naomi utilized her Money in the Bank contract to transform a singles match into a triple threat match, defeating Rhea Ripley and defending champion Iyo Sky for the Raw Women's World Championship. This victory came after a series of intense rivalries, including a No Holds Barred match between Naomi and Jade Cargill, which featured Bianca Belair as the special guest referee. The match between Naomi and Cargill was scheduled following a backstage assault on Cargill. Bianca Belair served as the referee for that specific encounter.
The event also showcased the depth of the WWE roster, including the NXT, SmackDown, and Raw divisions. Notable matches included Tiffany Stratton defending the SmackDown WWE Women's Championship against Hall of Famer Trish Stratus, and Becky Lynch defending the Raw WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship in a triple threat against Lyra Valkyria and Bayley. Because Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour was performing at the nearby Mercedes-Benz Stadium that same evening, people worried about potential viewership and attendance numbers. Jacy Jayne successfully protected her NXT title during the proceedings. Stephanie Vaquer also secured a victory in the Evolution Battle Royal.
