How WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 bridged two generations of console gaming
In short: Released in 2006, this title marked a pivotal shift for the WWE series. It was the first entry to reach seventh-generation hardware on the Xbox 360, while simultaneously maintaining a presence on the PlayStation 2. This transition introduced advanced analog controls and environmental interactivity that redefined the virtual wrestling experience.
Developed by Yuke's and published by THQ, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 represented a significant technical leap. The Xbox 360 version utilized a new analog grappling system, moving away from the button-based mechanics of its predecessors. This allowed for more fluid movement and realistic interactions, such as fighting within the arena crowd and utilizing environmental hotspots like ring ropes and scaffolding. Visually, the upgrade was stark; each superstar model on the Xbox 360 consisted of 20,000 polygons, a massive increase from the 5,000 polygons found in the previous PlayStation 2 iteration.
The game's depth extended to its gameplay systems, which introduced weight-class-specific move-sets. Lighter wrestlers gained access to martial arts or luchador techniques, while heavier competitors relied on power moves. Season Mode offered narrative-driven paths for various brands, featuring voice acting from stars like The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. Players could also engage in extensive customization, including the creation of stable groups and championship belts with spinning centerpieces, inspired by John Cena's real-world accessories.
Despite its success, the title faced challenges. A planned PlayStation 3 version was cancelled so developers could focus on other systems, and the game notably lacked the ability to import custom music on the Xbox 360, a feature present in earlier Xbox titles. While critics praised the presentation and content, some noted collision detection issues that complicated specific match types. Nevertheless, the game was a commercial success, earning a Platinum sales award in the United Kingdom for surpassing 300,000 units sold on the PlayStation 2 platform.
