How a Saudi partnership transformed a professional wrestling event
In short: WWE's Crown Jewel is more than just a wrestling show; it is a cornerstone of a massive strategic partnership. While most events are held in the United States, this annual spectacle serves as a centerpiece for Saudi Arabia's social and economic reform program, reshaping how the promotion operates globally.
Established in 2018, Crown Jewel is a premium live event produced by the American promotion WWE. This acts as Saudi Arabia's primary regular event, established through a decade-long multiplatform deal with the Ministry of Sport. This collaboration is designed to support Saudi Vision 2030, a program focused on the nation's social and economic reform. The initial event under this agreement was the Greatest Royal Rumble, held in Jeddah. This partnership was originally formed through a strategic multiplatform deal.
Usually occurring during late October or early November, the show often coincides with the Riyadh Season celebrations that started in 2019. While most iterations take place in Riyadh, the event has shown flexibility; for instance, the 2025 edition was moved to Perth, Western Australia, because the 2026 Royal Rumble is scheduled to be part of the 2025–2026 Riyadh Season. The inaugural show was held at the King Saud University Stadium. This particular event featured a tournament known as the WWE World Cup.
Since 2024, the event has introduced a unique competitive structure: the Crown Jewel Championships. These are contested in annual matches between the reigning men's and women's world champions of the Raw and SmackDown brands to determine who is the superior champion. Notably, although champions are awarded rings, the physical belts stay exhibited at Riyadh's WWE Experience attraction. The inaugural winners of the new championships were Cody Rhodes and Liv Morgan. Winners receive special rings, while the championship belts remain on display at a local attraction.
