In short: XG, a seven-member group formed in Japan, is challenging industry conventions by rejecting traditional genre labels. By blending R&B, hip-hop, and dance, they have created a borderless musical philosophy they call X-Pop. Their journey, from rigorous training to international stages, reflects a commitment to creativity and personal authenticity.

Formed by Xgalx, a subsidiary of Avex, XG consists of members Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Harvey, Juria, Maya, and Cocona. The group spent approximately five years training in Japan and South Korea before debuting in March 2022. Their development was guided by executive producer Simon, known as JAKOPS, who leveraged his background in the Korean idol system to shape their artistic identity. The group’s name, originally meaning Xtraordinary Girls, was reinterpreted in 2026 as Xtraordinary Genes to symbolize a commitment to creativity and breaking conventional norms.

The group’s philosophy, X-Pop, is designed to resist rigid genre boundaries. By drawing from Black American R&B, hip-hop, and pop-punk, they aim to create music that is universal rather than tied to a single country or culture. This borderless approach is supported by an international team of songwriters and producers. Beyond their sound, XG maintains a fictional universe where members portray themselves as alien-wolves, using these metaphors to represent freedom from convention and collective strength.

Personal and professional milestones have further defined the group’s trajectory. In December 2025, member Cocona shared their identity as transmasculine and non-binary, a moment that resonated with the group's evolving mission to empower diverse backgrounds. This openness has coincided with their rising influence in fashion and global media, including appearances at Milan Fashion Week and collaborations with major brands. Despite facing challenges, such as the 2026 arrest of their producer on drug-related charges, XG continues to expand their reach, performing at major festivals and embarking on international tours.
