How Lil Wayne built a hip-hop empire and sold it for nine figures
In short: Founded in 2003 as a joint venture with Cash Money Records, Young Money Entertainment evolved from a rap collective into a dominant cultural force. By launching the careers of global icons like Drake and Nicki Minaj, the label reshaped the industry before its eventual acquisition by Universal Music Group.
Lil Wayne launched Young Money Entertainment in February 2003 as a 51-49% joint venture with Cash Money Records co-founder Birdman. The label quickly became a powerhouse, operating as an imprint of Republic Records. Under the leadership of president Mack Maine, who took the role in 2009, the label cultivated a roster that included stars like Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga. The collective, known as Young Money, released three studio albums, including the 2009 debut We Are Young Money, which achieved gold certification from the RIAA for 500,000 shipments.
The label's commercial reach was immense, with 16 albums topping the Billboard 200 chart. Notable successes included Nicki Minaj’s 2010 debut Pink Friday, which sold 375,000 copies in its first week, and a string of chart-topping projects from Drake, such as Take Care and Views. The group also found international success with the single BedRock, which peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart in 2010, marking their first top-ten hit in that market.
Internal tensions eventually led to significant structural changes. In 2015, Lil Wayne filed a $51 million lawsuit against Birdman and Universal Music Group regarding unpaid advances and catalog rights. By September 2018, a settlement transferred Birdman’s 49 percent stake to Wayne, giving him full ownership. Shortly after, in June 2020, Wayne sold his master recordings and the entire Young Money catalog—including the works of Drake and Minaj—to Universal Music Group for $100 million. By late 2024, the label’s original roster had largely moved on, marking the end of a transformative era in hip-hop history.
