In short: Before he was a household name, Yang Se-jong was a competitive taekwondo athlete who turned down a prestigious sports university scholarship to pursue a dream sparked by high school plays. His journey from a part-time rental store worker to a multi-award-winning actor illustrates a high-stakes pivot in artistic ambition.

Yang Se-jong's path to stardom was not a linear progression. While attending high school in Anyang, Gyeonggi, he balanced a part-time job at a book and DVD rental store with a growing fascination for theater. Driven by this passion, he chose to reject a Samsung Foundation sports university grant in order to prioritise professional acting training, ultimately joining the Korea National University of Arts during 2012.

His professional breakthrough arrived rapidly after his debut in the medical drama Dr. Romantic. By 2017, Yang achieved a prolific output, starring in four different dramas in a single year, including the historical drama Saimdang, Memoir of Colors and the sci-fi thriller Duel. Following his memorable turn in the romantic series Temperature of Love, he secured 'Best New Actor' titles at the 6th APAN Star Awards, the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards, and the SBS Drama Awards. This period of rapid success led the press to label him a "monster rookie."

Despite his early fame, Yang's career has been shaped by the structural requirements of the South Korean entertainment industry, including mandatory military service. He enlisted in May 2020 and was discharged in November 2021 under specific Ministry of Defense guidelines regarding COVID-19. Following his service, he navigated a series of agency transitions, moving from Blossom Entertainment to a new agency in 2023, while continuing to take on diverse roles ranging from reality television to Netflix original series like Doona!.
