How a high school singing group became an R&B powerhouse with twelve million sales
In short: Formed in an Atlanta high school in 1990, Xscape rose to fame under Jermaine Dupri's guidance. Beyond their six top-ten hits, the group became a songwriting force, penning iconic tracks for others. Their journey through decades of reunions, reality television, and shifting lineups defines the complex evolution of modern R&B.
Xscape emerged from Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia, when Kandi Burruss, Tamera Coggins, Tameka Cottle, and sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott united in 1990. After Coggins exited in 1992, the remaining quartet caught the attention of producer Jermaine Dupri. Their 1993 debut, Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, was an immediate success, achieving platinum status and producing two top-ten Billboard Hot 100 singles. By the time they released their third album, Traces of My Lipstick, in 1998, the group had established a mature sound that resonated across the industry.
The group's influence extended well beyond their own discography. During a hiatus, members Burruss and Cottle demonstrated significant songwriting prowess, contributing to massive hits for other artists. They co-wrote TLC's chart-topping 'No Scrubs' and several tracks for Destiny's Child, including the number-one hit 'Bills, Bills, Bills'. This behind-the-scenes success highlighted the group's deep musical versatility, even as internal tensions and individual career ambitions led to multiple breakups and reformations over the years.
Since their formation, the group has navigated numerous transitions, including brief periods as a trio and performances under the name Xscap3. Despite these changes, their legacy remains robust, with total record sales exceeding 12 million units in the United States as of 2023. Their enduring impact was recognized in 2022 when they received the Lady of Soul Award at the Soul Train Awards, cementing their status as a foundational act in contemporary R&B history.
