In short: In the world of Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, the protagonist doesn't just teach pessimism—he embodies it. By corrupting the kanji of his name to mean 'Despair,' Nozomu Itoshiki turns every cultural norm into a fatalistic joke, satirizing Japanese society through a lens of extreme, often absurd, negativity.

The series, written and illustrated by Kōji Kumeta, follows Nozomu Itoshiki, a high school teacher who views every aspect of life, culture, and politics in the most negative light possible. His classroom, Class 2-He, serves as a stage for comedic sketches where he validates his defeatist arguments by threatening suicide or leading students into bizarre tangents. His primary foil is Kafuka Fuura, a student whose relentless optimism is described as being even further afield or ironically cynical compared to the teacher's gloom.

Beyond the comedy, the series functions as a sophisticated cultural critique. It employs a unique aesthetic that evokes the Taishō period (c. 1912–1926), a time of relative liberalism in Japan before the rise of militarism. This is signaled by the characters wearing obsolete kimono and hakama, and by the use of anachronistic architecture and technology. Even the anime production by Shaft mimics old film with a washed-out, grainy visual style and refers to the date as if Emperor Hirohito were still alive, using 'Shōwa 83' to represent the year 2008.

The narrative structure often takes common Japanese phrases or cultural practices to their most logical—or literal—extremes. For instance, a discussion on 'amakudari' (descending from public to private sector) results in Nozomu physically 'descending' to his previous life, while 'omiai' (arranged marriage meetings) are depicted as marriages made official by mere eye contact. Despite the teacher's lack of authority and work ethic, the series maintains a loyal following, with over 5 million copies in circulation and a dedicated radio show that has received over 153,000 listener emails.
