From Newgrounds viral sensation to the creative force behind the hit series Smiling Friends
In short: Zach Hadel, known online as psychicpebbles, transformed from a self-taught animator uploading Flash cartoons in Kansas to a central figure in modern adult animation. By prioritizing creative control and distinct comedic sensibilities, he successfully transitioned from independent internet projects to co-creating the acclaimed Adult Swim series Smiling Friends.
Born in 1993, Hadel began his career by sharing Adobe Flash animations on the platform Newgrounds. Although he briefly enrolled in college for graphic design, he left before his first class to focus entirely on his craft. His early style was heavily influenced by iconic television series such as The Simpsons, South Park, and SpongeBob SquarePants. This foundation in independent web animation allowed him to build a dedicated audience through viral hits, including a 2011 parody addressing the repetitive nature of a popular line from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Hadel's collaborative spirit defined much of his early work. He partnered with Chris O'Neill to produce the series Hellbenders and the SleepyCast podcast, which launched in 2014. His reach expanded through various creative ventures, including storyboarding for SpongeBob SquarePants in 2018 and participating in charity livestreams that raised over $100,000 for California wildlife relief. His interview podcast, Schmucks, which ran from 2017 to 2019, further showcased his ability to engage with a wide range of entertainers.
The pinnacle of his career arrived with the 2020 premiere of Smiling Friends, a project co-created with Michael Cusack. The show, which follows employees at a nonprofit dedicated to bringing joy to others, became a significant success for Adult Swim. Despite securing renewals through a third season, Hadel and Cusack have stated that the upcoming third season will conclude the series. They cited a desire to maintain high quality and avoid burnout, demonstrating a commitment to artistic integrity over the pressure to extend a successful franchise indefinitely.
