Zayed International Airport serves as the primary international gateway for Abu Dhabi. While it functions as a major hub for Etihad Airways and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, its infrastructure has undergone radical transformations to meet global demand. Originally conceived in 1974 to modernize transport away from the congested city island, construction began in 1979 and led to an inauguration in early 1982.
A standout feature of the airport is its United States border preclearance facility. Established on January 25, 2014, it allows passengers on specific flights to complete entry processing before departure. This means travelers are cleared for entry into the U.S. while still in Abu Dhabi, mirroring systems found in locations like Canada and Ireland. As of October 31, 2024, this service expanded to include all Etihad flights to the United States within the airport's new Terminal A.
The airport's capacity has scaled dramatically through architectural evolution. The transition from three older terminals to the massive Midfield Terminal (now Terminal A) in late 2023 boosted annual passenger capacity to over 45 million, with potential for expansion to 60 or even 80 million. This new facility is one of the world's largest, featuring advanced biometric 'Smart Travel' technology designed to validate identities and bypass traditional ticket checks by 2025.
The airport has also been a site of significant historical events, from an assassination attempt in 1977 to tragic aviation accidents. Despite these complexities, it remains a cornerstone of UAE infrastructure, connecting the region to 128 destinations via a sophisticated network of highways and dedicated bus routes.
