In short: Before becoming a two-time UFC Strawweight Champion, Zhang Weili worked as a supermarket cashier, a kindergarten teacher, and a security guard. Her journey from a specialized martial arts school in Handan to the pinnacle of mixed martial arts is a testament to relentless adaptation and skill.

Born in Handan, Hebei, China, on September 30, 1990, Zhang Weili’s path to professional fighting was anything but linear. After an early start in Shaolin Kung Fu at age six, she transitioned to Sanda and Shuai Jiao at age 12. However, a recurring back injury forced her to abandon competitive Sanda before she could reach her full potential in that discipline.

Her professional ascent began in earnest after a period of diverse employment in Beijing, including roles as a hotel desk clerk and a fitness instructor. In 2010, she utilized gym equipment for free after hours to hone her skills, eventually discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It was through her connection to MMA pioneer Wu Haotian that she was introduced to professional training at Black Tiger Fight Club.

Zhang’s impact on the UFC has been historic. In August 2019, she became the first Chinese fighter to win a UFC championship by defeating Jéssica Andrade via TKO. She has since become a dominant force, known for her technical versatility. She famously expressed a philosophy of being 'like water'—a concept she draws from Tai Chi—to adapt her tactics to any opponent.

Her technical dominance was most evident in her 2023 bout against Amanda Lemos, where she achieved a striking differential of 296–29, the largest in women's UFC history. This performance, alongside her multiple Performance of the Night awards, solidified her status as one of the most significant figures in the sport's history.
