In short: In the manga Kekkaishi, two rival families protect a school built on a sacred site that attracts dangerous spirits. While they fight to keep these creatures at bay, the true origin of the land's power is a heartbreaking tale of a father's forbidden attempt to save his son.

The series centers on Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura, teenage heirs to the Hazama clan. Their duty is to guard Karasumori, a site that draws ayakashi—supernatural beings that grow stronger the longer they linger on the grounds. Using a technique called Kekkai, the pair creates magical energy barriers to capture and destroy these intruders. This responsibility is supported by the Urakai, a mysterious shadow organization of ability users that influences the nation's affairs from the periphery.

As the narrative unfolds, the legend surrounding Karasumori is revealed to be a fabrication. The land's potent energy actually stems from Chūshinmaru, the illegitimate son of the clan's founder, Tokimori Hazama. Centuries ago, Tokimori attempted to bestow unearthly power upon his son using forbidden arts. The experiment failed catastrophically, granting Chūshinmaru the ability to drain the life force of everyone nearby. To prevent further tragedy, Tokimori was forced to seal his own son beneath the earth. However, the seal was imperfect, allowing the boy's power to leak out and act as a beacon for spirits.

The resolution of the series involves a final, desperate effort to relocate Chūshinmaru to a new site, displacing a corrupt founder of the Urakai who had seized a land-god's domain. Yoshimori's mother ultimately sacrifices herself to secure the new seal, bringing an end to the centuries-old burden. This conclusion not only resolves the supernatural threat but also dissolves the long-standing rivalry between the Sumimura and Yukimura families, allowing the protagonists to find peace.

Created by Yellow Tanabe, the manga was serialized from 2003 to 2011 and won the 52nd Shogakukan Manga Award. By June 2020, the series had over 17 million copies in circulation. Its success led to a 52-episode anime adaptation by Sunrise, which aired between 2006 and 2008, and several video games, cementing its place as a significant work in the shōnen genre.
