How a Florida high school drummer became Las Vegas's most recognizable prop comedian
In short: Scott Christopher Thompson, better known as Carrot Top, turned a childhood nickname into a multi-decade career defined by trunks of eccentric inventions. From his early days in Cocoa to a long-standing residency at the Luxor, his act remains a unique staple of the Las Vegas entertainment landscape.
Born in 1965 in Rockledge, Florida, Scott Christopher Thompson grew up in Cocoa as the son of a NASA engineer. His distinctive stage name originated from a local swimming coach who noticed his red hair, a feature that would eventually become his professional trademark. While attending Florida Atlantic University, Thompson performed his first stand-up routine, setting the stage for a career that would move far beyond traditional comedy.
By the early 1990s, Thompson gained national attention through appearances on Comic Strip Live and Star Search. His act is characterized by a high-energy delivery involving dozens of props stored in large trunks on stage. He typically presents these items with quick one-liners before discarding them, often concluding his performances with a lip-synced musical montage. Beyond his stage work, he served as a spokesperson for 1-800-CALL-ATT and held a continuity role at Cartoon Network during the mid-1990s.
Since November 2005, Carrot Top has maintained a residency at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, headlining for MGM Resorts International. His career has spanned diverse media, including guest spots on television series like Scrubs, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and various talk shows. He has also been a frequent collaborator in the comedy circuit, appearing on programs ranging from Last Comic Standing to The Joe Rogan Experience.
In recent years, the comedian has faced significant legal and personal challenges. In August 2026, a $15 million lawsuit was initiated by singer Brian Evans, alleging the distribution of unsolicited explicit content and subsequent pressure regarding a legal settlement. Further allegations emerged from Zachary Defazio, who claimed the comedian misrepresented his age on a dating application and provided alcohol to him while he was underage. Following an attempted suicide in September 2026, his scheduled public appearances were cancelled.
