From Broadway's Baker to Marvel's Howard the Duck: The Versatile Career of Chip Zien
In short: Few performers can claim to have originated a legendary Broadway role and then return decades later to play the character's father. American actor Chip Zien has navigated everything from Stephen Sondheim's complex musicals to voicing iconic Marvel characters, building a career defined by remarkable theatrical range and unexpected versatility.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 20, 1947, Chip Zien has become a staple of the American stage. He is perhaps most famous for creating the Baker, the primary character in Stephen Sondheim's 1987 Broadway debut of 'Into the Woods'. Such was his bond with the show that he revisited the Delacorte Theater in 2012 to portray the Mysterious Man, the father of his original role from 26 years before.
Zien's career is also deeply intertwined with the works of composer William Finn. He appeared in all three musicals of the 'Marvin Trilogy,' playing Marvin in the 1979 Off-Broadway production of 'In Trousers' and Dr. Mendel in 'March of the Falsettos' and 'Falsettoland.' When these two one-act musicals were combined for a 1992 Broadway run as 'Falsettos,' Zien reprised his role as Mendel.
Beyond musical theater, Zien has demonstrated significant range in film and television. He provided the voice for the titular character in the film 'Howard the Duck' and appeared in the 2006 film 'United 93' as Mark Rothenberg. His television credits include roles in 'Love, Sidney,' 'Reggie,' and 'Almost Perfect,' as well as recurring appearances on 'Law & Order.' Most recently, in 2023, he earned critical acclaim on Broadway playing Rabbi Josef Roman Cycowski in 'Harmony.'
His theatrical resume is extensive, including roles in 'Grand Hotel' (1989), 'Les Misérables' (2007), and 'A New Brain' (1998), for which he received a 1999 Drama Desk Award nomination.
