In short: From high-society polish to health code violations and a home overrun by cats, the story of the Bouvier Beales is one of America's most haunting descents. This musical untangles the dysfunctional mother-daughter bond of two women who traded their status for isolation.

Based on a 1975 documentary by Albert and David Maysles, the musical follows Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale ("Big Edie") and her daughter, "Little Edie." The two were relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy, living in a mansion in East Hampton, New York. The narrative tracks their journey from socially polished aristocrats to isolated figures living in a decaying estate.

The structure of the musical is unique: Act One is largely fictional, imagining what their lives might have been like when Little Edie was 24 and Big Edie was 47. It even includes a central event—an engagement between Little Edie and Joe Kennedy, Jr.—that never actually occurred. In contrast, Act Two is set in 1973, thirty-two years later, and draws its dialogue and action directly from the Maysles Brothers' documentary.

The production is noted for its psychological depth, with critics comparing the refined language of the score to that of Stephen Sondheim. While some reviewers found the first act tedious or bordering on "celebrity camp," others praised it as a work of high artistic integrity. The show premiered Off-Broadway in 2006 starring Christine Ebersole, who won an Obie for her dual roles, before moving to Broadway where it won three Tony Awards.

The musical has seen global reach, with productions in Japan, Brazil, Australia, Canada, and the UK. In Brazil, the production was so acclaimed that its set design was selected for exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial 2015.
