The power dynamic shifts after Marcello takes the fall for a robbery Simone commits, resulting in a year of imprisonment. Upon his release, Marcello returns to a community that views him as a pariah. Desperate for his share of the stolen loot, he confronts Simone, only to be humiliated and beaten in public. This final indignity serves as the catalyst for a cold, methodical plan for revenge. Marcello lures his tormentor to his shop under the guise of a new heist, trapping him in a dog cage.
The ensuing confrontation is visceral and tragic, ending in Simone’s death. In a desperate, perhaps hallucinatory, attempt to find validation or relief, Marcello tries to show the body to his former friends, only to realize he is entirely alone. The film earned significant critical acclaim, with Marcello Fonte winning Best Actor at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. While it was Italy’s submission for the 91st Academy Awards, it failed to secure a nomination, yet it remains a haunting exploration of how far a man can be pushed before he breaks.
