How Joy Woods is rewriting the history of Broadway's most iconic roles
In short: From Chicago roots to breaking long-standing racial barriers on Broadway, Joy Woods is a rising force in musical theatre. By securing historic roles in productions like Gypsy and Little Shop of Horrors, she is not just performing classics; she is fundamentally changing who gets to stand center stage.
Born in Chicago on December 8, 1999, Joy Woods was raised in a musical household as the youngest of six siblings. After graduating from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 2018, she honed her craft at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, graduating in 2019. Her rapid ascent through the theatrical ranks includes off-Broadway roles in Little Shop of Horrors and a notable appearance in the virtual Ratatouille: the TikTok Musical in 2021.
Woods has become a transformative figure in musical theatre by claiming roles previously held by white performers. In May 2023, she made history as the first Black woman to play Audrey off-Broadway in Little Shop of Horrors. She continued this trend in 2024, becoming the first Black woman to play Louise in the Broadway revival of Gypsy at the Majestic Theatre. This performance earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Her stage presence has also resonated deeply in the digital age; a performance of the song "My Days" from The Notebook on Instagram garnered over 3 million views. From her West End Sally Bowles turn in Cabaret to anniversary shows like Songs of a New World, Woods combines classic theatrical skill with contemporary cultural influence.
Her trajectory highlights a shift in Broadway casting, where performers of color are increasingly being cast in seminal roles that were historically unavailable to them. From her Broadway debut as Catherine Parr in Six to her upcoming West End appearances, Woods is cementing her status as a premier talent in the industry.
