In short: In 1981, Jennifer Holliday transformed the musical landscape with her role as Effie White. Her powerhouse vocals on the Dreamgirls cast album didn't just win a Grammy; they launched a career marked by immense talent, significant personal struggles, and a resilient return to the stage.

Jennifer Holliday's rise to stardom was inextricably linked to the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls. After replacing Nell Carter in the workshop known as Project 9, Holliday's performance as Effie White became a sensation. Her iconic performance of the Act I finale, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", secured her a June 1982 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.

The stage show's triumph extended to her studio work, where her vocals on the Dreamgirls: Original Broadway Cast Album won a 1983 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. However, her path was not without hardship. Following the release of her 1987 album, Get Close to My Love, Geffen Records dropped her, citing her weight gain as making her unmarketable.

Holliday has been candid about the connection between her health and her mental well-being, noting that her weight gain stemmed from depression. This period was marked by a failed suicide attempt on her 30th birthday via a sleeping pill overdose. She eventually underwent gastric bypass surgery in 1989 and later lost a total of 200 pounds, working to raise awareness for depression in the Black community.

Despite these challenges, Holliday's career has seen remarkable longevity. She has transitioned from Broadway stardom to television roles, such as Lisa Knowles on Ally McBeal, and returned to the musical stage for revivals like The Color Purple in 2016. Her resilience is further evidenced by her continued musical output, including her 2014 album The Song Is You and her 2025 live album, Love Songs: Live at the Catalina Jazz Club.
