The actor whose films have sold over 100 million tickets
In short: In the competitive landscape of South Korean cinema, few stars command such massive commercial power. Ha Jung-woo has achieved a milestone reached by only three other actors, doing so nearly a decade younger than his predecessors. From breakout thriller roles to directing his own comedies, his versatility defines a generation of film.
Born Kim Sung-hoon in 1978, Ha Jung-woo entered the industry through a lineage of talent. The son of veteran actor Kim Yong-gun, Ha pursued acting from the age of four, eventually studying at Chung-Ang University after training at a private institute. His early career saw him in supporting roles before he adopted his stage name in 2005 under the recommendation of talent agency SidusHQ.
His meteoric rise began in 2008 with the serial killer thriller The Chaser, which sold over 5 million tickets and earned him critical acclaim. This success established him as a versatile force across genres, from the sports film Take Off (2009) to the fantasy epic Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017). His talent has been recognized by international figures; American director Martin Scorsese has reportedly compared his potential to that of Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon.
Beyond acting, Ha is an accomplished director and artist. He made his directorial debut in 2013 with Fasten Your Seatbelt and has continued to explore filmmaking through works like Chronicle of a Blood Merchant. He is also a painter, utilizing a hybrid of Pop art and Expressionist styles. For Ha, painting is more than a hobby; he has described it as a vital way to survive the 'invisible war' of acting.
His commercial dominance is evidenced by his massive box office reach. During 2019, the movie Ashfall earned more than $61 million globally, ranking as South Korea's fourth most successful local production that year. His recent work includes the 2022 Netflix series Narco-Saints, for which he won the Grand Prize at the 13th Korea Drama Awards.
