The dark, complex sequel that redefined the Gundam franchise forever
In short: Released in 1985, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam moved away from its predecessor's tone to explore much darker themes. Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series follows a brutal civil war between the corrupt Titans and the rebel AEUG, centering on teenage pilot Kamille Bidan as he navigates a fracturing Universal Century.
The series is set in the Universal Century (UC) 0087, exactly eight years after the original 1979 series. The narrative shifts focus to a conflict between two new factions: the Earth Federation's corrupt task force, the Titans, and the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG). This conflict is personal for protagonist Kamille Bidan, a civilian teenager who becomes an AEUG pilot after a violent encounter with a Titans officer named Jerid Messa. The war's brutality is highlighted by the Titans' use of G3 nerve gas on defenseless colonies. This escalation eventually forces the Earth Federation to rule against the task force's illegal actions.
The production was famously complex. Director Yoshiyuki Tomino began planning the sequel in February 1984, initially exploring concepts like 'Gather Stime'—a mental connection between individuals. Due to the complicated mechanical design of the titular Zeta Gundam, the machine's appearance was delayed until the third cour of the show. To bridge this gap, the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II was introduced as a lead unit. The series also introduced a mechanical animation director to the Sunrise production team. This shift helped manage the intricate design and movement of the various mobile suits.
The series' impact was profound, though Tomino himself expressed mixed feelings, once noting he felt the story should have ended with the first series. However, he acknowledged that Zeta's popularity significantly expanded the franchise's reach. The show's intensity is reflected in its music, featuring melodies by American singer Neil Sedaka, and its legacy continues through various adaptations, including the 'A New Translation' film trilogy released between 2005 and 2006. The soundtrack's themes were adapted from various songs, including 'Bad and Beautiful' and 'Better Days are Coming'. Additionally, the film trilogy featured music performed by the artist Gackt.
