In short: In 1988, director Yoshiyuki Tomino released a film that pushed the Gundam franchise to its limits. Char Aznable's radical plan to drop the asteroid Axis into Earth aims to trigger a nuclear winter, hoping to accelerate human evolution as Newtypes through a catastrophic planetary collision.

Set in the Universal Century timeline during UC 0093, the film focuses on the escalating rivalry between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. Char leads the Neo Zeon faction in a desperate attempt to force humanity's evolution by driving the asteroid Axis into Earth. This high-stakes conflict pits the Federation's Londo Bell task force, including Bright Noa, against Char's superior MSN-04 Sazabi mobile suit. During the Fifth Luna operation, the Federation's Londo Bell engages Neo Zeon forces. This intense combat results in the destruction of Lhasa following a successful asteroid collision. Amuro is eventually forced to retreat because of the Sazabi's advanced capabilities.

The production was marked by significant creative shifts. An original script draft over two hours long featured Amuro's partner, Beltorchika Irma, but she was replaced by characters Chan Agi and Quess Paraya to suit the film's tone. Director Tomino also sought to move away from traditional manga aesthetics, requesting character designs that emphasized human drama and Western-inspired facial structures. The character Mineva Lao Zabi was ultimately excluded from the script to prevent excessive narrative complexity. Furthermore, the original story was later expanded into a novel series titled Hathaway's Flash.

Technologically, the film was a milestone for the franchise, being the first Gundam theatrical release to utilize computer graphics. Toyo Links created this five-second clip showing the Sweetwater colony spinning through space. While the film earned ¥1.16 billion in Japan, Tomino has expressed retrospective doubts about the final product. Despite this, the story's complexity led to the novelization Beltorchika's Children and the subsequent Hathaway's Flash trilogy. Hideki Nakano served as the CG designer, spending three months on the Sweetwater colony sequence. Additionally, the mechanical designs were refined through a competition involving various artists like Yutaka Izubuchi and Hideaki Anno.
