How a childhood performer rose from musical theatre to pop stardom
In short: Before she was a platinum-selling pop star or a soap opera icon, Natalie Bassingthwaighte was charging 20 cents for mini-concerts. From playing Tinker Bell in primary school to auditioning against thousands for major musical roles, her journey through the Australian entertainment industry is a masterclass in versatility.
Bassingthwaighte’s career began in the disciplined world of musical theatre. Her early stage work included playing Tinker Bell in a primary school production at Balarang Primary School. She later honed her craft at Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts and the Australian College of Entertainment, eventually securing a role as Mrs. Cohen in the 1999 Australian tour of the rock musical Rent after being selected from over 6,000 candidates.
Her theatrical versatility was further tested during the run of the musical Chicago in Perth. Despite casting directors being initially skeptical of her dancing abilities, she secured the role of June and served as an understudy for the principal role of Roxie Hart. She also made her debut in the Asian production of Chang & Eng, portraying Adelaide Yates in both Singapore and Bangkok.
This theatrical foundation provided a springboard for a multifaceted media career. In 2003, she gained prominence on the soap opera Neighbours as Izzy Hoyland, earning three Logie Award nominations. She transitioned into music as the lead singer of the electro-pop band Rogue Traders in 2004, and later achieved solo success with her 2009 debut album, 1000 Stars, which reached number one on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Beyond performance, Bassingthwaighte has expanded into television presenting and entrepreneurship. She hosted So You Think You Can Dance Australia for three seasons and served as a judge on The X Factor Australia from 2011 to 2014. In 2015, she also launched her own children's clothing label, Chi Khi.
