How did you get to be here? A musical told in reverse.
In short: When it premiered on Broadway in 1981, Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along was a notorious failure. The story moves backward through twenty years, tracing how three friends' lives unravel as one man trades his artistic soul for Hollywood fame. Today, this once-panned production is a celebrated modern masterpiece.
The original 1981 production, directed by Hal Prince, was plagued by chaos from the start. The show featured a massive cast of 26 actors, many of whom were teenagers or young adults playing characters who were middle-aged for much of the performance. This casting choice, along with cluttered sets and confusing costumes, contributed to a disastrous preview period. In fact, the production was so troubled that Prince eventually discarded the costumes entirely, replacing them with simple t-shirts that described each character's relationship to the protagonist.
Spanning twenty years, the musical's unconventional layout tracks Charlie Kringas, Mary Flynn, and Franklin Shepard from the late 1950s back to the late 1970s. The narrative moves in reverse chronological order, starting at a 1976 party celebrating Frank's success as a Hollywood producer and ending in 1957 as the friends watch the Sputnik satellite pass overhead. This structure forces the audience to witness the slow deterioration of their idealism and friendship, asking how Frank's pursuit of wealth eventually led to his estrangement from his closest allies.
Despite closing after just 16 performances in 1981, the show has undergone a massive transformation. The writers spent roughly 15 years revising the work, eventually abandoning the use of very young actors. A 2023 Broadway revival featuring Lindsay Mendez, Daniel Radcliffe, and Jonathan Groff achieved success, securing four Tony Awards, notably Best Revival of a Musical. The show's enduring emotional core and Sondheim's celebrated score have turned a historical flop into a cult classic and a subject for a long-term film adaptation.
