From pop star to West End legend: the multifaceted career of Paul Nicholas
In short: Before becoming a household name in British sitcoms, Paul Nicholas was a rising pop force. His journey through the music industry led him to the heights of musical theatre, where he helped define iconic West End productions and transitioned into a prolific career as a producer and director.
Born Paul Oscar Beuselinck in Peterborough on 3 December 1944, Nicholas's path to stardom was anything but linear. He began his career in the music industry as early as 1960, initially performing under the stage name Paul Dean. During this era, he formed the group Paul Dean and the Dreamers and released solo singles in 1965 and 1966. His musical trajectory shifted significantly when he adopted the name Oscar and began working with entrepreneur Robert Stigwood, eventually settling on the stage name Paul Nicholas. Nicholas's transition from pop to musical theatre proved highly successful. In 1972, he secured a landmark role as the lead in the West End's Palace Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His stage presence further cemented his status when he starred as Danny in the original London production of Grease, performing alongside Elaine Paige as Sandy—making them the first British couple to play those lead roles.
He also created the role of Rum Tum Tugger in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats in 1981. Beyond performing, Nicholas has maintained a lasting influence on the industry through production and direction. He has been involved in numerous large-scale projects, including co-producing a new musical based on A Tale of Two Cities with Bill Kenwright in 1998. His business ventures, such as Paul Nicholas & David Ian Associates Ltd, have managed sold-out tours of productions like Jesus Christ Superstar. This versatility has allowed him to move seamlessly between sitcoms like Just Good Friends, where he earned a BAFTA, and diverse stage roles ranging from King Arthur in Camelot to the pirate king in The Pirates of Penzance.
His legacy is marked by a rare ability to navigate the distinct worlds of pop music, television comedy, and high-stakes musical theatre, often while simultaneously managing the business side of the shows he stars in.
