From Broadway standby to Tony-nominated star: the rise of Megan Hilty
In short: Before she was a household name on television, Megan Hilty was navigating the high-stakes world of Broadway. From being told she was too young for a major role to becoming a celebrated leading lady, her journey through musical theater is a masterclass in persistence and vocal talent.
Megan Hilty's ascent in the musical theater world was marked by both significant breakthroughs and unexpected setbacks. In 2004, while studying at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, she was initially cast as Audrey in the national tour of Little Shop of Horrors. However, producers ultimately decided she was not age-appropriate to perform opposite co-star Anthony Rapp, leading to her departure from the production.
Hilty found her footing in the Broadway phenomenon Wicked. Her Broadway debut occurred in August 2004 as Glinda the Good Witch's standby; she first appeared on stage on October 8, 2004, with Idina Menzel. On May 31, 2005, she replaced Jennifer Laura Thompson in the role, later appearing in national tours and a Los Angeles production ending in early 2009.
Her versatility has since spanned stage, screen, and voiceover work. Tony Award nominations were granted to her for playing Brooke Ashton in Noises Off and Madeline Ashton in the stage version of Death Becomes Her. Beyond the stage, Hilty has appeared in the musical-drama series Smash—for which she received a Grammy nomination for the song 'Let Me Be Your Star'—and provided the singing voice for Snow White in Shrek the Third.
Hilty's career is characterized by a transition from specialized musical theater roles to a diverse portfolio including sitcoms like Sean Saves the World and various voice acting roles. Her ability to command both Broadway stages and television sets has established her as a prominent figure in American entertainment.
