In short: From singing commercial jingles at 15 to winning Grammys, Melissa Manchester’s career is a masterclass in musical versatility. Whether she is performing on Broadway, teaching at the USC Thornton School of Music, or topping the Billboard charts, her influence spans decades of pop, jazz, and musical theater.

Coming from a musical household in the Bronx, Manchester was born on February 15, 1951, shaping her future early. Her father, David Manchester, served as a bassoonist for the New York Metropolitan Opera for thirty years, while her mother was a pioneering female entrepreneur in the clothing industry. By age 17, while studying at the High School of Performing Arts, Manchester was already a staff writer for Chappell Music.

Her rise to mainstream stardom was defined by the 1970s and 1980s. Her 1975 hit "Midnight Blue" spent 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number six in August of that year. She achieved even greater commercial success in 1982 with "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," which hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned her a Grammy for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance, beating competitors like Linda Ronstadt and Olivia Newton-John.

Beyond the pop charts, Manchester has demonstrated remarkable artistic range. She has contributed to film soundtracks, such as the Academy Award-nominated "Through the Eyes of Love" from Ice Castles, and has transitioned into acting. In 2023, she took to the stage as Mrs. Brice in a national touring production of the Broadway musical Funny Girl.

Manchester's resilience is evident in her later career. In 2013, she utilized an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to independently finance her album, You Gotta Love the Life, which was released in early 2015. This era marked her 20th studio album and showcased her ability to reinvent her sound while maintaining the melodic strength that first made her a household name.
