Two Chicago teenagers discover they are actually the co-kings of a mysterious Pacific island.
In short: Brady and Boomer lived ordinary lives in Chicago until a royal advisor arrived at their high school. They were suddenly thrust into the role of rulers over Kinkow, a bizarre island nation filled with ancient superstitions, odd customs, and dangerous creatures, forcing the fraternal twins to face their fears together.
Pair of Kings, which aired on Disney XD from 2010 to 2013, follows the lives of two Chicago-born teenagers who learn they are heirs to the throne of Kinkow. Because all historical records regarding their birth order were lost, the brothers are required to rule the island as a diarchy. Their transition from normal high school students to monarchs is complicated by the island's strange environment, which includes both a light and dark side, and a cast of characters ranging from a disgruntled cousin named Lanny to a royal advisor nicknamed Sasquatch.
The series underwent a significant shift in its third season. Following the departure of Mitchel Musso, Adam Hicks joined the cast as King Boz, who is revealed to be the brothers' long-lost triplet. Boz, who was raised by apes after being lost in a storm as a child, brings a unique set of skills to the throne, including the ability to communicate with animals. This revelation fundamentally changed the show's dynamic, moving from a story about twins to one about a trio of brothers navigating their royal responsibilities.
Behind the scenes, the show was designed to appeal to a boy-focused audience on Disney XD by incorporating outrageous and unpredictable elements often found in animation. Filmed at Sunset Gower Studios, the production relied on a live studio audience and a laugh track to deliver its comedic tone. While the show features fantastical elements like mummified villains and magical rings, it is anchored by the central relationship between the brothers, whose bond remains the core of their efforts to protect Kinkow from various threats, including the return of ancient enemies like Kaita the Bat-Rider.
