A Turkish soap opera's dramatic off-screen conflict mirrored the chaos of its own plot
In short: Paramparça, a Turkish drama about babies switched at birth, captivated audiences with its tangled web of revenge and romance. Yet, the show's most intense conflict occurred behind the scenes, where a public feud between its lead actors led to accusations of mobbing, lawsuits, and a sudden, dramatic departure.
Premiering in December 2014, Paramparça (Broken Pieces) centers on two families whose lives collide after a hospital error swaps their newborns. The narrative follows the wealthy Cihan and Dilara alongside the impoverished Gülseren, weaving a complex story of class disparity, accidental deaths, and shifting alliances. As the plot progressed, characters faced tragic losses, including the death of Gülseren, and navigated complicated romantic entanglements involving psychiatrists, kickboxers, and mafia-connected figures.
The off-screen reality proved just as volatile as the script. In February 2016, Nurgül Yeşilçay, who played Gülseren, exited the series following a bitter dispute with co-star Erkan Petekkaya. Yeşilçay alleged that Petekkaya subjected her to psychological pressure and belittlement, citing his behavior as a form of mobbing. She claimed the production team ignored these issues, even noting that the original director, Cevdet Mercan, had departed the show in June 2015 because he could not manage the escalating tensions on set.
The conflict centered on personal disagreements and professional boundaries, specifically regarding onscreen intimacy. Yeşilçay accused Petekkaya of refusing to perform kissing scenes while simultaneously humiliating her, whereas Petekkaya dismissed these claims as slanderous lies. The fallout was extensive: Endemol Shine Turkey threatened legal action against Yeşilçay for her public statements, and Petekkaya eventually filed a lawsuit alleging insults via text message, though he later withdrew the complaint. The two actors remain estranged, marking a definitive end to their professional relationship.
The series eventually concluded after navigating these internal fractures, with the final season focusing on the characters' divergent paths and the eventual reconciliation of Cihan and Dilara. Despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil, the show maintained its focus on the intricate, often tragic, lives of its protagonists, mirroring the high-stakes drama that defined its narrative arc until the very end.
