In short: Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher follows a small-town clergyman possessed by a powerful entity. Alongside an Irish vampire and his former girlfriend, he traverses America to confront a deity who abandoned Heaven. This satirical, violent saga remains a landmark of the Vertigo imprint's gritty storytelling legacy.

The narrative centers on Jesse Custer, a preacher from Annville, Texas, who becomes the host for Genesis. This supernatural being, born from the union of an angel and a demon, possesses no individual will but wields power that could rival God. Bonded to this entity, Custer gains the ability to command absolute obedience from anyone who understands his words. His journey is a literal quest to find the Creator, who fled Heaven the moment Genesis was conceived.

Custer is joined by Tulip O'Hare and a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy. Their path is fraught with obstacles, including the Saint of Killers—an invincible, perfect-aiming assassin—and The Grail, a secret organization protecting the bloodline of Jesus. The series, which ran for 75 issues between 1995 and 2000, is celebrated for its religious satire and dark humor. It earned the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in 1999 and was later adapted into a four-season television show on AMC.

The influence of the series extends beyond its own pages. Stephen King noted that his Dark Tower comic series drew inspiration from it, and the character Yorick in Y: The Last Man carries a lighter identical to Custer's. Despite its acclaim, the property spent years in development hell, with film projects at Miramax and Columbia Pictures failing due to budgetary concerns and the perceived religious controversy of the source material. It remains a definitive work of the genre, ranked by IGN as the third-greatest Vertigo title.
