From South African stages to the voices of magical ponies
In short: Before she became a staple of modern animation, Tabitha St. Germain was a classically trained stage actress. Her journey from performing in operettas as a child to voicing iconic characters like Rarity and Princess Luna showcases a versatile career spanning decades and continents.
Born in the early 1960s, Tabitha St. South Africa served as the starting point for the artistic path of Germain, who was once called Paulina Gillis. She went to private academies during her father's tenure with Swaziland development firms, debuting on stage at age 8. This early start in theater saw her performing as Tiny Tim in 'A Christmas Carol' and appearing frequently in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. She grew up in a household where her father worked for development agencies. Her early training involved frequent appearances in various operettas.
In 1980, she moved to Canada and refined her craft at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She made her professional debut in the musical 'South Pacific' at the Huron County Playhouse. Her initial years featured varied roles, such as winning a 1995 Dora Award for the Stephen Sondheim musical 'Assassins', before she adopted the name Tabitha St. The legal name change to Tabitha St. Germain occurred in November 1997. During her youth, she was raised in the Catholic faith but eventually left it. She later joined another religion before abandoning that one as well by 1984.
Germain has since become a prolific voice actress, lending her talents to a vast array of projects. She is perhaps most recognized by modern audiences for her roles in 'My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic' (2010–19), where she voiced Rarity and Princess Luna. Her extensive portfolio also includes roles in 'Death Note,' 'Black Lagoon,' and numerous 'Barbie' and 'Littlest Pet Shop' productions, demonstrating a remarkable range from dramatic anime to children's programming. She provided voices for characters in Dinosaur Train and George of the Jungle. Her work also includes roles in the anime series Shakugan no Shana.
