From Wall Street analyst to the voice behind iconic video game characters
In short: Before she was voicing characters like Yuna in Ghost of Tsushima, Sumalee Montano was navigating the high-stakes world of investment banking in New York and Hong Kong. Her journey from a Harvard graduate to a versatile voice actress is a striking example of a radical career pivot.
Sumalee Montano’s professional trajectory is far from linear. After graduating from Harvard University in 1993, she entered the rigorous field of finance, working as an investment banking analyst for Morgan Stanley. Her career in the financial sector spanned several years and included stints in both New York City and Hong Kong, but she eventually found herself lacking passion for the industry.
This realization prompted a transformative period of backpacking through Africa, a journey that helped clarify her desire to pursue acting professionally. Her transition into performance was marked by a remarkable versatility; she has demonstrated proficiency in a wide array of accents, ranging from Chinese and Thai to British, Southern, Vietnamese, and Japanese. Her first foray into voice acting arrived in 1999 with the music-rhythm game Space Channel 5, where she voiced the character Pudding.
Since then, Montano has built an extensive portfolio across live-action television and voice-over work. In live-action, she is recognized for her roles in series such as ER, where she played nurse Duvata Mahal for three seasons, and more recently, her acclaimed performance as Inoue Sato in the 2021 Peacock series The Lost Symbol. Her voice-over credits are equally diverse, spanning major franchises like Transformers: Prime, Skylanders, and Ghost of Tsushima.
Her heritage is also a significant part of her background; she is of Filipino and Thai descent. This cultural lineage is reflected in her family history, as her great-uncle was the Filipino actor and writer Severino Montano. Today, she continues to be a prominent figure in both animated series and live-action drama.
