In short: When the Berenstain Bears returned to television in 2002, they brought more than just familiar faces. This animated revival aimed to teach preschoolers vital life lessons through the adventures of a bear family living in Bear Country, bridging the gap between classic literature and modern digital broadcasting.

The 2002 series served as a revival of the original 1985–87 cartoon, though the two incarnations differ significantly in production style and in-universe elements. While the original series featured Honey Bear, the toddler cub was notably absent from this new iteration. The new episodes were co-produced by Nelvana Limited and Agogo Entertainment, with associations to Treehouse TV in Canada and PBS in the United States.

The production faced unique constraints. Because Canadian legislation mandated that Nelvana use local designers and writers, Stan and Jan Berenstain had restricted participation. The authors did, however, attempt to influence specific details, such as ensuring the bears did not wear shoes and that Papa Bear would not wear his hat inside the house. They also expressed a desire to avoid 'complete, total banality' in the storytelling.

Visual changes were also necessary for the medium of animation. Certain patterns from the books, such as polka dots and plaids, were largely eliminated, a restriction that had also affected previous animated specials. Despite these minor shifts, the series remained largely faithful to the books, focusing on core themes like responsibility and generosity through the lives of Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Brother Bear, and Sister Bear.

The series had a diverse broadcasting life. In the United States, it premiered on PBS on January 6, 2003. Beyond English-language broadcasts, the series achieved a unique milestone when 20 episodes were dubbed into the Lakota language. These episodes, titled 'Matȟó Waúŋšila Thiwáhe', began airing on PBS stations in the Native Dakotas on September 11, 2011.
