A genius on the run discovers that his entire life was a manufactured lie.
In short: Jarod is a prodigy capable of mastering any profession in moments. After escaping a sinister think tank that exploited his intellect for black ops, he spends his freedom delivering justice to the guilty while evading the very handlers who raised him. His quest for truth reveals a reality far darker than expected.
The series centers on Jarod, a man abducted as a child by an organization known as The Centre. Located in Blue Cove, Delaware, this institution used Jarod’s unique ability to mimic any skill set—from soldier to surgeon—to conduct dangerous simulations. Jarod eventually discovers that the data he provided was weaponized for illegal operations and the orchestration of deaths. Upon realizing he was being manipulated, he escapes, only to find that the people he believed were his parents were impostors.
While Jarod lives on the run, he uses his talent to investigate crimes that the law has ignored, often forcing perpetrators to experience the consequences of their own actions. He leaves behind clues for his pursuers: Sydney, the psychologist who mentored him; Broots, a computer expert; and Miss Parker, a formidable operative. Their dynamic is defined by a complex, shifting loyalty. Miss Parker is tasked with bringing Jarod back, yet she is simultaneously haunted by the mystery surrounding her own mother’s death, which she eventually learns was not the suicide she was led to believe.
The show aired on NBC for four seasons, concluding in 2000. Despite its cancellation, the narrative continued through two television films in 2001 and later expanded into novels starting in 2013. The series is notable for its crossover events with the show Profiler, where Jarod’s character interacted with other investigators. Throughout his journey, Jarod’s search for his true origins remains the primary engine of the story, paralleled by Miss Parker’s own struggle to uncover the secrets of her family and the institution that controls her life.
The creators, Steven Long Mitchell and Craig W. Van Sickle, drew inspiration from the life of serial impostor Ferdinand Waldo Demara. Although the show ended on a cliffhanger, the creators have long expressed interest in providing a definitive conclusion. The legacy of the series persists through its dedicated fanbase and its transition into digital storytelling and literature, keeping the mystery of Jarod’s identity alive long after the final broadcast.
