Why this manga author used a pseudonym to hide a major plot twist
In short: When Hiroya Oku wrote Thunder 3, he chose to publish under the name Yuki Ikeda. This wasn't just for a change of pace; it was a calculated move to ensure a specific first-chapter twist would land with maximum impact on unsuspecting readers.
From 6 May 2022 until 5 June 2026, Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Magazine published Thunder 3, a tale centred on middle schoolers Pyontaro Tezuka, Hiroshi Ochanomizu, and Tsubame Azuma, known as the "Small Three". Their lives shift when they discover a parallel world via a mysterious disc borrowed from their teacher, Doc. The stakes escalate when Pyontaro's sister, Futaba, and their pet dog are pulled into this new dimension and captured by aliens. The narrative follows these young protagonists as they unite with local humans to rescue Futaba and battle extraterrestrial threats. This adventure began when a lifelike dragonfly emerged from a television screen after the disc was played.
The decision to use a pen name was revealed by Oku on September 24, 2026. He explained that using his real name might have diminished the shock value of the series' opening plot twist, which he intended to use to surprise new readers. The manga's success led to a ten-volume tankōbon collection released between October 17, 2022, and August 17, 2026. Kodansha USA eventually licensed the work for a print release in late 2024. This collection was released in ten volumes over a four-year period.
The series has garnered significant critical attention, including a nomination for the 2022 Next Manga Award and a fourth-place ranking on Takarajimasha's 2024 list of best manga for male readers. Unend's anime version debuted its initial season between 9 July and 1 October 2026, with a subsequent season expected throughout 2027. The anime adaptation was directed by Keisuke Ide and features music by Frédéric Chateau and Akiyuki Tateyama. Currently, the series is available for worldwide streaming on Netflix.
