The secret life of a woman who infiltrates online hate groups
In short: To stop mass violence, one woman chose to live a double life in the darkest corners of the internet. Inspired by a real-life operative, an upcoming thriller explores the high-stakes world of undercover work where the goal is to prevent public attacks before they ever occur.
The television miniseries 'The Savant' is based on a true story first featured in Cosmopolitan magazine in August 2019. The narrative centers on an individual who became known as 'the Savant,' a woman who deliberately infiltrates online hate groups. Her objective is to identify and disrupt potential large-scale public attacks, specifically focusing on the work done by divisions of the Anti-Defamation League. The source material is an article by Andrea Stanley. The show highlights how these operatives work to stop mass shootings. It explores the specific tactics used to monitor extremist activity.
The production, created by Melissa James Gibson, stars Jessica Chastain as Jodi Goodwin. A significant element of the project's development was the commitment to anonymity; Chastain stated that her performance was intentionally designed not to mimic the real-life character exactly to ensure she remains hidden. The series is an eight-part crime thriller intended for Apple TV, involving a production team that includes director Matthew Heineman and producers from Fifth Season and Anonymous Content. Nnamdi Asomugha joins the main cast alongside James Badge Dale in a recurring role. Pablo Schreiber was added as a guest star in July 2025. The production involves Kelly Carmichael of Freckle Films as an executive producer.
The project has faced significant logistical hurdles and delays. Originally scheduled to begin filming in September 2023, production did not start until April 2024. The release schedule has been repeatedly pushed back: after an initial planned premiere for late 2025 was postponed without explanation—a move some critics called a mistake given the subject matter—the series was later moved to July 2026, and finally delayed again to a spring 2027 release. This reflects the complex nature of adapting sensitive, real-world counter-terrorism efforts into mainstream media. The first delay occurred just three days before the original September 26, 2025 date. This pause was reportedly linked to the assassination of Charlie Kirk two weeks prior. Jessica Chastain publicly stated she did not agree with this specific decision.
